It’s 92 degrees outside, the humidity is rolling in off Lake Erie, and your air conditioner (the one appliance you need most), is covered in ice. Sounds impossible right? Yet every summer, when a heat wave settles over Western New York, our phones light up with the same call: “My AC is frozen solid and it’s blowing warm air. I need help!”
A frozen AC isn’t a fluke, and it isn’t your system “working too hard.” It’s a warning sign. When ice forms on your evaporator coil or refrigerant lines, something is preventing your air conditioner from absorbing heat the way it was designed to. Left alone, a frozen system can lead to water damage, a burned-out compressor, and a repair bill far bigger than the fix that would have prevented it.
Here are the five most common reasons Buffalo air conditioners freeze up right and what you can do about it.
1. A Dirty or Clogged Air Filter
This is the number one culprit we see, especially in homes where the AC sits unused for eight months of the year and then runs nonstop through a July heat wave.
Your air conditioner needs a steady flow of warm indoor air passing over the evaporator coil. When the filter is clogged with dust, pet hair, and pollen, airflow drops. Without enough warm air moving across it, the coil gets colder and colder until the moisture in the air freezes right onto it. Once ice starts forming, it restricts airflow even further, and the problem snowballs.

2. Low Refrigerant From a Leak
Refrigerant is the lifeblood of your cooling system. When levels drop because of a leak (often at aging fittings, coils, or line connections), the pressure inside the system drops with it. Lower pressure means lower temperatures at the evaporator coil, and once that coil dips below freezing, ice takes over.
Here’s the important part: refrigerant doesn’t get “used up.” If your system is low, it’s leaking, and simply topping it off is a band-aid. During a Buffalo heat wave, a system limping along on low refrigerant will freeze, thaw, and freeze again until the compressor gives out.
What TRS Recommends: This one isn’t a DIY fix. Handling refrigerant requires EPA certification, and finding the leak requires professional diagnostic equipment. If you notice ice on the copper lines outside, hissing sounds, or your AC running constantly without cooling, shut the system off and call a professional.
3. Blocked or Closed Vents and Registers
Many Buffalo homes, especially our beloved older doubles, colonials, and bungalows have quirky ductwork that was retrofitted long after the house was built. When homeowners close vents in unused rooms or push furniture, rugs, or curtains over registers, they choke off the airflow the system depends on.
Just like a dirty filter, restricted airflow means less warm air reaching the evaporator coil, and a cold coil turns into a frozen one. It also forces your blower motor to strain, driving up your electric bill during the exact weeks when it’s already at its highest.
What TRS Recommends: Walk through your home and make sure every supply and return vent is open and unobstructed, even in rooms you don’t use. Closing vents doesn’t save energy; it unbalances the system.
4. A Failing Blower Motor or Fan Problem
The blower fan is what moves air across the coil in the first place. If the motor is weakening, the fan belt is worn, the fan speed is set incorrectly, or a capacitor is failing, the airflow through the system slows to a crawl. The refrigerant keeps getting cold, but there’s not enough air passing over the coil to absorb that cooling, so the coil ices over.
Blower problems love to reveal themselves during heat waves, when the system is running for hours on end and every weak component gets pushed to its limit.
What TRS Recommends: Listen for warning signs: humming, rattling, squealing, or a blower that seems weaker than usual at the vents. These are symptoms worth addressing before the next stretch of 90-degree days, not during it.
5. Running Your AC When It’s Cooler Outside
Buffalo weather loves whiplash (just take a look at this weeks forecast). We can go from a 58-degree night to a 90-degree scorcher in the same week. Running your air conditioner when outdoor temperatures are low (generally below the low 60s) can cause the pressure in the system to drop and the coil to freeze. Then, when the heat wave hits, homeowners crank the thermostat way down to compensate, forcing the system to run continuously without a break, which also encourages icing, especially on a system that already has a dirty coil, weak airflow, or marginal refrigerant charge.
What TRS Recommends: Avoid running the AC on cool nights. Instead open the windows and enjoy that lake breeze. During heat waves, resist the urge to set the thermostat to 60. Your system can typically only cool about 15–20 degrees below the outdoor temperature, and setting it lower doesn’t cool faster; it just runs the system into the ground.
