Don’t Wait for the Heat to Hit: Your AC Health and Safety Checklist
May 18, 2026
Matt Schultz here, one of the owners of TRS Heating and Air Conditioning. As we experience the first hot weekend here in Buffalo, I am reminded to tell you to turn on your AC before summer officially hits. Our current forecast is starting to heat up according to WIBV 7-day forecast and we don’t want you to be stuck in the heat!
I’ve been in this business long enough to know how every summer starts the same way. That first hot weekend rolls in, everybody scrambles to turn their AC on for the first time and the phones go crazy. Don’t let that be you.
Take 10 minutes before the heat hits and run through this step by step check list. It’s simple stuff, but it makes all the difference.
1) Turn On Your AC
Before you do anything else, do these three things. Turn your AC on. Pull out your filter and take a look at it, if it’s grey and packed with dust, swap it out before you run the system. And if you threw a cover on your outdoor unit over the winter, get that off now. I see it every year, people forget about the cover and run the unit anyway. That’s a costly mistake and we don’t want our customers to experience it!
2) Run The 1 Hour Test
Here’s what I tell every customer: don’t just flip it on and walk away. Run your AC for a full hour and actually pay attention to whether it’s cooling your house down. Once it hits 70 degrees, drop your thermostat to 68 and let it run for another hour or two.
If it’s doing its job, you’ll feel it. But if something smells off, musty, burning, anything that doesn’t seem right or if it’s running nonstop and your house just isn’t cooling down, stop right there. That’s your sign. Call TRS right away to schedule a maintenance call. That’s exactly what our Health & Safety inspection is designed to catch.
3) Schedule Your AC Health and Safety Inspection Now
When you schedule a Health & Safety inspection with TRS, we’re not just taking a quick look and moving on. We do a full 22-point check of every critical component in your system. That means we’re inspecting your outdoor condensing unit, checking refrigerant pressures, recording compressor and fan amperage, cleaning your evaporator drain line, inspecting your blower assembly, testing the thermostat operation, checking your filter, and cycling the entire system to make sure everything is running the way it should. At the end, you get a full written report of every finding. With this inspection comes peace of mind for the homeowner and an extension of life for your equipment!
We look at the details most people never think about because those are exactly the things that turn into expensive breakdowns in the middle of July. Our goal is simple: make sure your system is running safely, efficiently, and reliably before the heat ever becomes a problem.
